Aku - Artistic StatementContrary to what most people believe, there is no great mystery to understanding abstract expressionist art. The beginnings of abstraction in the art world began in the late 1800’s, when photography was invented. Imagine – you have spent years of your life learning how to capture what you see with your eyes and present it through your paintbrush on canvas, and suddenly someone invents the camera. Artists were forced to re-evaluate not only how they captured the world, but also what they wished to capture. Masters at the time, like Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, realized that they could capture more than what we see with our eyes – they could capture what we see with our hearts. Very simply put, abstract art isn’t simply a visual medium, it is also an emotional one. When you next view an abstract work of art, it’s very important that you don’t try too hard to figure out what it looks like, but instead examine how it makes you feel. If you take this viewpoint, you will discover a whole new world of art that is evocative, interesting and sophisticated.
